How to Export a Print-Ready PDF from Adobe Illustrator

Saving your artwork as a print-ready PDF in Adobe Illustrator ensures that your file preserves its quality, color settings, fonts, and layout exactly as intended. At IMAGE ZONE, we recommend exporting your designs using high-resolution settings with proper bleeds and marks for best printing results.

PDF files are the industry standard for commercial printing due to their reliability and cross-platform compatibility. By following a few simple steps, you can confidently generate a PDF that maintains the integrity of your design and meets our press requirements.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Finish your design and double-check all elements: text, images, alignment, and bleeds.
  2. Go to File > Save As and choose Adobe PDF (.pdf) as the file format.
  3. Select a location and name for your file, then click Save.
  4. In the PDF options dialog box:
    • Choose [Press Quality] preset.
    • Under Marks and Bleeds, check Trim Marks.
    • Check Use Document Bleed Settings (assuming you've set 0.125" bleeds).
    • Make sure Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities is unchecked to reduce file size.
  5. Click Save PDF.

Best Practices for Illustrator PDFs

  • Embed all images: Linked images may cause missing assets—embed them to ensure everything prints correctly.
  • Outline fonts: If you're not including fonts with the file, convert them to outlines to avoid font substitution.
  • CMYK color mode: Always design in CMYK for accurate print color reproduction.
  • Bleed area: Extend backgrounds and graphics at least 0.125" beyond the trim line.
  • Flatten transparencies: Prevent printing issues by flattening transparencies during export.

Why It Matters

Submitting the correct type of PDF file helps us move your job through production without delays. Files saved improperly may require revision, which can affect turnaround time and quality. When you follow the steps outlined above, you’re helping ensure smooth prepress approval and professional results every time.
